Befriending Week 2020, 1-7th November.

Help us celebrate Befriending Week 2020 by considering coming on board with us as a volunteer befriender.

Do you want to volunteer with young people in your area? Fife Young Carers are recruiting volunteer befrienders to support young carers to access activities in their community. Young carers are children and young people who in some way look after or support someone in their family who has an illness, a disability, or is affected by mental ill-health or substance misuse (Getting It Right For Young Carers in Fife 2018-21). Our young carers range from 8 to 25 years old.

Befriending Coordinator, Katie Macfarlane, says:

“Volunteer befrienders will enhance what we offer by helping our young people access social activities in their communities, build trusting relationships, and having fun along the way! Recent events in the world have been difficult for us all to live through, and our Young Carers are no different.”

Fife Young Carers is dedicated to raising awareness of young carers support needs, as well as providing opportunity for them to have a break from their caring role and build confidence. “This could be a walk along the beach, a visit to a local site or café, or a variety of fun activities – we can work together to plan!” states Katie. We provide person centred support through group and one-to-one meetings, young carer statements, and support young adult carers to move into adulthood.

“Befriending is such an important role with befrienders working alongside individual Young Carers to improve their confidence and ensure they have a life and identity outwith their caring role” emphasises Kirstie Howell, Manager of Fife Young Carers.

Do you have the personality, skills, time or experience to support a young person in your community? We ask that you commit to at least 3 months volunteering with us on a weekly or fortnightly basis.

If interested contact admin@fifeyoungcarers.co.uk or call 01592786717. All training and support will be provided by FYC. Offered roles are subject to successful PVG being received (cost covered by FYC), and all volunteers must be 18 +.”
